Curated by Katya Parra, the exhibition celebrates 25 years of the artist’s pioneering work in transforming textile waste into art.

ATHENS – From 4 to 14 November 2026, Espaço Casa Brasil at the Embassy of Brazil in Athens presents Entre Véus e Linhas, a new exhibition by visual artist and fashion designer Fernando Viana. It is the first time the work of one of the pioneers of textile upcycling in Brazil has been shown in Greece. For 25 years, Viana has been turning industrial offcuts into art, long before the circular economy reached the centre of the global debate.
The highlight of the exhibition is Viana’s contemporary reinterpretation of the Tupinambá mantle. Using discarded silk and cotton and hand-tapestry techniques, the artist recreates the iconography of this sacred artefact from high-end textile waste.
“This new creation represents a return: a reconnection with forgotten roots, with the very heart of Brazilian heritage, with the indigenous ancestry that sustains our land. Every sewn fragment is a rediscovered memory.”
Fernando Viana
More than an exhibition to be contemplated, Entre Véus e Linhas was conceived to be experienced. Large, made-to-measure upcycled curtains fill the space. These are pieces that speak both to the format of gallery art and to architecture and circular design projects.
On opening night, guests will be taken through Brazil’s tropical biomes on a poetic immersion in the artist’s creations. During the day, the natural light of Athens passes through the translucent veils and casts the flora and fauna painted on them across the space, making the installation a living work in constant transformation.

Born in Rio Grande do Sul, Fernando Viana moved to London in the 1990s, where he built his career in fashion. His collections won the Designer Fashion Award (2007) and were sold in shops in the United States, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. It was far from Brazil that he rediscovered his roots and made them the focus of his research. For 25 years he has collected, cleaned and hand-combined industrial offcuts, tailoring scraps, and discarded silks and fibres, raising waste to the level of haute couture and museum tapestry. Back in Brazil, he set up his studio in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro. He has created costumes for TV Globo (the telenovela Paraíso Tropical), dressed musician João Donato for his tours and taken part in public art projects such as Eu Rio Muito. For Viana, true luxury is knowing and celebrating one’s own roots.

Fernando Viana
